How to get the perfect pout

For a select few women (think Angelina Jolie) beautiful pouty lips just come naturally. Others however need to work at creating this effect. Luckily for you I have the secret recipe.

1. Prime the Lips

It’s very important to prime your lips before applying lip make up. This helps prevent lipstick from smudging or bleeding into any fine lines and also makes the lipstick colour last longer. Apply a very small amount foundation or loose powder to your lips as the base. This will also even out the colour of your lips.

2. Outline the Lip with Lip Liner

Before outlining the lips study the shape of your lips, decide on what you want to achieve and then proceed. Make sure your lips are smooth and grease free. Use a sharp lip liner pencil in a shade as close to that of your lipstick colour as possible and with a steady hand lightly outline the lips. For the upper lip, start at the centre and work out towards the outer corners of the mouth. For the lower lip, work from side to side.

For small/thin lips, take the lip liner pencil slightly outside the natural lip line and work slowly and steadily to form an ideal shape. For large/fuller lips, take the lip liner pencil just inside the natural contours of the lip and work slowly and steadily to form an ideal shape.

3. Fill Up with Lipstick

Using a lip brush, fill in the colour. For the upper lip, start at the centre and work outwards. On the lower lip work from side to side. Don’t pack on too much colour. It is much easier to add more later than to remove any excess.

4. Blot Off

Fold a clean tissue and place it between your lips. Press the lips lightly together to remove the excess colour and to help seal the remainder, so that it stays on the lips rather than moving onto every glass you use.

5. Final Lip Gloss Application

Finally, finish with a lip gloss to get a gleaming look. Women with extra-full lips should however use lip gloss very sparingly.

1. Never wear a lip liner darker than your natural lip colour or your lipstick.
2. Do not over enhance your lips by drawing the lip liner outside your natural lip lines.
3. Always check for lipstick stains on your teeth after applying your lipstick.
4. Don’t buy a lipstick before trying the colour out first on your lips.
5. You can always mix two different colour lipsticks to give you a new colour.
6. Remember too much gloss can enhance fine lines and wrinkles.
7. Note dark colours make lips look smaller and light colours will expand the mouth.

Sometimes a good lipstick or gloss is simply not enough to create a permanent pouty look. In this instance you have a couple of different options…

Dermal fillers are also known as injectable fillers. These give immediate visible results without the additional expense of cosmetic surgery. Dermal fillers can be used to augment the lips by restoring volume and definition (or injected in other areas to remove fine lines and wrinkles).

COST: roughly $350-$770. A few treatments are required to get the desired shape.

PROS: Lasts a long time and can look very natural

CONS: A few treatments are required, treatments can be painful, expensive and can take 24 hours to settle.

Cosmetic Tattooing or Permanent Makeup is a cosmetic technique which employs tattoos (that being permanent pigmentation of the dermis) as a means of producing a replica of makeup. It can be used for lips or applying other permanent enhancing colours to the skin of the face, lips and eyelids.

COST: roughly $300-$700

PRO: Also long lasting. It can give lips a natural definition and removes the need to apply lip make up.

CONS: Expensive and lasts for a long time so if you are not happy with the colour there’s not much you can do.
