So here’s the thing. As we get older, anti-aging preventative treatments become something we all care more about. We become more precious about our skin care routine. We are more meticulous about how often we cleanse and moisturise well. We don’t leave the house without slathering on sunblock and we swear by any good anti-oxidant cream or serum.
And then we discover a harsh reality summed up in just two words:
It’s obviously the last thing we want to hear but it’s the truth. Many of us are unknowingly causing damage to our skin during our nightly slumbers. That is, the repeated compression of your face against your pillow night after night can create fine lines and wrinkles that deepen over time.
The forehead is a common area for the sleep lines to appear as the weight of your head presses and folds the skin over, causing one big vertical line. Your laugh lines also become even deeper when pressed against your pillow and sleeping on your side or tummy can also push in the delicate skin around the eyes. Hours of this activity, day after day, year after year, can lead to permanent wrinkles etched across your face.
In short, everyone is at risk of developing sleep wrinkles. Side sleepers and stomach sleepers are especially vulnerable to developing these lines and creases and expert cosmetic nurses can often tell what position a person sleeps in based on the severity of lines and wrinkles on one side of the face versus the other. Luckily sleep wrinkles disappear immediately on younger skin, but they eventually become permanent from constant compression and decreased skin elasticity with age and are most noticeable from age 35+.
